Maybe you’ve heard your friends or neighbors talk about streaming TV shows from HULU, Netflix, AppleTV or Roku. Even if you haven’t, Internet TV is a new and growing way in which millions of people around the world are choosing to receive additional content.
In the past year alone, Internet video watching has risen 45 percent and shows no sign of slowing down. This rapid growth in viewership has led streaming Internet company Netflix to eclipse Comcast in number of subscribers; Meaning that Netflix now has more subscribers than the largest cable company in the country. But before you call to cancel your cable, know that many people are using Internet TV as a complement to other existing services to expand their options.
So, what does that mean for you? This change in the way people receive TV is opening up new ways to get the shows you want, when you want them. In the future, some Internet providers plan to begin producing exclusive content, similar to HBO.
And streaming doesn’t just deliver your favorite shows, it can also stream Internet radio stations straight into your living room. With providers like Pandora, you can customize your own radio station, based upon your preferences in music.
To help our customers venture into streaming Internet TV, we are holding a class on Saturday April 30 from 1 to 3pm to teach the latest in streaming video. Our experts will be able to answer your questions and show you how this new technology works.

The custom retailer is looking to expand into new markets
March 1, 2011: CHESTERFIELD, Mo. – The Sound Room, St. Louis’s premier custom home and audio retailer, has announced it will be merging the Creve Coeur location into the Chesterfield location, to better serve their customers and allow for future expansion into other markets.
“Our business model has changed over the years, with us often going to the customer’s home. It no longer makes sense to have two redundant showrooms within ten miles,” said David Young, The Sound Room president. “The move will allow us to operate more efficiently out of our Chesterfield location and make a probable jump into other markets.”
The Sound Room has operated two retail stores in West St. Louis County for 25 years and will be relocating staff to the Chesterfield location. By merging the two locations, the company will be able to increase the number premium products on display, for a better sampling by customers.
“We’ve had a lot of success in a challenging year and much of that has come from staying ahead of the shifting home technology market,” said Young. “This move is just another step to growing The Sound Room and allows us to focus on some new categories.”
In 2010, The Sound Room was named No. 26 on the CE Pro Top 100 list, which ranks the country’s top custom integrators by revenue. The company also received the award for Business of the Year from the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce.
In anticipation for the merger, the Creve Coeur location will be holding a moving sale to liquidate inventory. Premium products not normally sold at a discount will be available on a first come first serve basis. The Sound Room will be standing behind all sales, offering the usual great service and warranties. The Creve Coeur location’s last day will be March 26, 2011.

Driving down the street or watching the news, it is hard to miss the Ultimate Electronics going out of business signs and commercials. The sight may seem all too familiar after the national retailer only declared bankruptcy a few years ago. But even after going though this process once, it became painfully obvious that their “lower than Best Buy or Wal-mart price guarantee” model was unsustainable.
While having 46 stores, their buying power and efficiencies were nothing other big box stores. By offering the lowest prices Ultimate Electronics put itself out of business by not giving customers a benefit to shopping at their stores.
For smaller chains and independent stores to thrive, they must focus on their competitive advantage of professional expert staff, premium name brands and exemplary service before, during and after the sale.
When you go to an independent store, you know they appreciate your business and the staff is going to be truly an expert. Their prices will be competitive, but often the selection will truly be quality items, not on display to hit a price point. Cheaper is not always better. Better is having someone to explain the products and suggest the one that works best for you.
At The Sound Room we truly work hard to bring the latest technology with the best service possible. Next time you are considering buy a new piece of home technology, don’t leave your purchase to chance. Ask our experts, who on average have more than a decade of experience!

Standing out among some of the regions best companies, The Sound Room was named the 2010 Business of the Year by the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce at their annual awards luncheon. Marking the first time the local home audio and video specialty retailer received the award from the 900 member chamber of commerce.
“We had a great year and have been a part of the chamber for many years. Looking around at the other candidates, it makes us feel honored to be chosen,” said David Young, The Sound Room president. “The last few years have been difficult for many in our industry, with some of the biggest names going out of business.”
Many of the most effected retailers have been big-box stores and retailers not embracing change. Being a local custom home audio and video retailer has allowed The Sound Room to respond to the changing needs of their customers and stay on the cutting edge of technology. In 2010, the company added a solar division, 3D TVs and home health care automation.
“We work hard to bring value to our customers and couldn’t have done it without our expert staff,” said Young. “They truly care about giving the customer the best experience possible and work hard to stay knowledgeable about the industry.”
The Sound Room was also named no. 26 on the CE Pro magazine’s Top 100 List of custom retailers and Crestron Dealer of the Year in 2010. According to Young, the company has been able to separate itself from other integrators by keeping prices competitive and simply giving customers the best advice possible.

It is not often you can describe your competition as friendly, but that is the relationship we shared with Ron Blifford, president of Hi-Fi Fo-Fum. Always a unique character, Ron helped pioneer the specialty audio business in St. Louis. Our team at The Sound Room would like to express our deepest sympathies on the passing of Ron.
The Sound Room’s relationship with Ron spans to 1978, where David Young, president of The Sound Room first met him while working at another A/V store.
Opinionated and fun, Ron spent years in Hawaii. He embraced the Hawaiian culture and dressed the part, even when back in St. Louis. In fact, one of our fondest memories of Ron took place when a Sound Room staff member mistook him for a Hi-Fi Fo-Fum installer, because of the way he was dressed. But the truth is Ron wouldn’t have had it any other way. He was an everyday person and lived life to the fullest, and he will be truly missed.
