The Sound Room Completes $2M Custom Technology Project in Flint Hill, MO
Single-family home boasts multiple control facets including a custom theater

April 28, 2008: CHESTERFIELD, MO – PAT or Personal Applied Technology was the underlying theme behind the 1999 made for TV movie, Smart House.  In this G-rated film, the Cooper family benefits from a computerized home manned by a cyber maid (that is until the “maid” takes over and controls the entire household).  Sound farfetched?  Not any more!

For The Sound Room brings the “smart house” one step closer to reality, and in today’s real life version, the house doesn’t control the family.  Case in point, The Sound Room’s latest custom installation boasts a plethora of technological enhancements to the tune of $2 million.

According to David Young, president of The Sound Room, his company recently completed this “future is now” project at a single-family home in Flint Hill, MO.  In addition to a custom home theater, the project includes automated lighting control, security, climate, entertainment, sprinkler systems and locks – even the fish tank is high tech!

“The home network trend has increased in popularity since the beginning of the decade,” said Young.  “In fact, home theaters have been the bulk of our company’s business for years.  But more recently, home networking and automation facets have gained momentum and become increasingly important to home owners.”

Young indicated that customers of The Sound Room want to garner more control over their lives.  “One way to accomplish that task,” he said, “is to make the home front a fun, relaxing environment where life is simplified and your household works for you…not the other way around.”

The Sound Room controls just about everything in the Flint Hill home including HVAC, lighting, audio, security, telephones, intercom, pools and waterfalls.  Highlights of the project, include:

  • Creston Distribution System – allows family members to watch any movie, TV show or camera from any television in the home at anytime (all without interfering with anyone else’s viewing pleasure).
  • Integrated Security System – includes complete access control, i.e., upon entering the driveway, the family’s cars are sensed by a secure HID system, which opens both gates automatically, including the correct garage door (without a single touch of a button).
  • Server Room – houses all wires and related equipment in both an aesthetic and functional setting.  Included in the line up are six custom Middle Atlantic racks with dedicated ventilation.  A dedicated HVAC unit is set at 60 degrees year round.

“The theater in this home is something to behold,” added Young.  “We designed it from the ground up in conjunction with acoustical engineers for maximum performance.  Every last detail has been managed meticulously from construction techniques to sight lines to product selection.

“The theater floors, walls and ceiling float using a ‘room within a room’ concept,” Young continued.  “An 18-foot wide Cinecurve screen from Stewart can mask to any aspect ratio.  Nineteen power amplifiers from Classe and Rotel deliver 8,100 rms watts to the B&W CT 800 series speakers.  To round out the final dimension of realism, we added 10 D-Box chairs, complete with motion stimulation.”

Other eclectic features of the Flint Hill home include a race track around the perimeter of the residence, and an electric train that runs on tracks weaving in and out of multiple rooms.  In addition, fiber optic ceiling lights in bedrooms and the theater line up to match the star constellations and simulate shooting stars via the Creston lighting system.  Two custom Vision Art pieces and an Inca ceiling lift hide 50” Pioneer Elite plasma televisions in three rooms positioned throughout the household.
